James Joyce’s “Araby” is a great tale and an all-time favorite. “Araby” can be criticized from different aspects. It is the story of a child. James Joyce permeated the subject of his story with various symbolic nuances, create the real world. In the real world, each and every person has to face frustration, discontent, love, hate, reality. This is true and universal. “Araby is about dreams, happiness, realism, darkness and a monotonous world.

The story’s boy hero lives in the drab surroundings of Dublin. From the beginning of the story we realize that the boy secretly worships a girl. She is the sister of the boy hero’s friend, Mangan. The boy nurtures a very deep and pure passion for the girl of his dreams. He anxiously waits every day to take a look at the girl. But the boy never gets a chance to talk to his beloved. It always carries the image of the girl. You can’t forget your name for a moment. He describes his condition in the following words: “I imagined that I would carry the chalice safely through a multitude of enemies.”

The hero boy yearned for the girl’s beauty and love. Very coincidentally, the girl talks to the boy. It’s a great time for the boy. The girl talks about “Araby”, a great party, it is the dreamland that is full of glamor and grandeur. For the boy it is a double pleasure. First the girl of his dreams talks to her and secondly he is excited about the place “Araby”. It’s another romantic affair for the hero boy.

He wants to visit this land of dreams together with his girl. But she cannot accompany him because he has retired to his convent. The boy promises to bring him some gifts from that splendid place called — Araby. The hero boy now wishes to memorize those few moments and very few sweat phrases that they exchanged. This is the only important job for the child. And on the other hand he wants to go to the magical place called Araby. He eagerly awaits the day when he will go to Arabia. He is very excited and full of excitement. He is very happy that he is finally on his way to the destination of his dreams.

But due to a delay, he arrived in Arabia at a very uncomfortable time. When you arrive at the venue at that time most of the booths are closed and also much of the gala ends in the dark. You cannot savor the glamor and grandeur of your dream place. He discovers that all dreams are breaking before his eyes and he can do nothing to hold them back. There is complete darkness in the corridor. He learns that the place is only intended for commercial purposes. And in such a place neither his dream nor his love can be held tightly. He left the place in anger and frustration. The place has no charm for him. Discover that this place is very inferior. You cannot equate the place of your dream with the real place where you are.

The place is basically a place for the negotiation and purchase of different basic products. In such a place, his entire dream is shattered. Before reaching the place, you are in the world of dreams. In that world he finds the girl and Araby. But from now on you can see the harsh reality that is very harsh. You feel frustration and this frustration is universal. It lies deep in the heart of man. Everyone wants to free him from the monotonous reality, but fails. Failure, frustration, mechanical manners, anger, anguish are all universal diseases of every man.

Joyce very kindly and easily through this child held the idea of the current standard of living. Use various images and symbols to show the universal experiences of this universe. Herein lies Joyce’s simplicity towards life and her approach to life. Through the loving relationship between the boy and the girl, he focuses on the point that what we want sometimes we do not achieve that desired and most desired object in our life. Then we only suffer from frustration.
