Children and Hotels

Some hotels are ideal for families. I mean, they have a pool, maybe a game room, a playground, things for the kids to enjoy. Others may not be as kid-friendly, but all hotels have other guests who expect their children to be good during their stay.

If you have a child who participates in travel sports like hockey, basketball, or soccer, you know they spend a lot of time in hotels. There are games, there are tournaments, and the entire team (if not multiple teams) is likely to be staying in the same hotel. That makes for a lot of children. It’s great because you can hang out with the other parents, the kids can hang out with their friends and teammates, but there must be limits to what the kids can do in and around the hotel.

For example, no other guest appreciates a gang of children running through the hallways screaming at the top of their lungs. If you don’t let your kids run like that at home, why do they run in a hotel? Another thing that annoys other guests is that quiet times are not respected. Just because you are away from home does not mean that you can misbehave at all times of the day or night.

Being in a hotel is a freedom, parents can go to the restaurant or the bar while the children go to the pool, but this is also complicated since children must always be supervised near the water, regardless of their age. Even if parents take turns servicing the pool, it’s better than no supervision. Ideally, children should behave properly in the pool area, which means no running, no diving in shallow water, and respecting the pool rules. The same goes for the gym or fitness center if the hotel has one. This is for all guests to use, and if your child has a legitimate reason to be there, supervised, that’s great, but having a bunch of kids in the gym bothering other guests is a no no.

For the most part, children and hotels are a great combination, and families observe the rules, children are polite and quiet and all is well, that’s when they are allowed to go crazy when problems arise. No one wants to be the one kicked out of a hotel, so stick to the rules so everyone has fun.
