Staying safe on a 125cc scooter or 50cc moped

If you are looking for an inexpensive way to travel and get to work or school, then a small motorcycle or scooter is hard to beat. Small bikes like a 125cc scooter or 50cc moped don’t cost a lot to buy. They are cheap to insure and use very little gasoline. Even better is that they are easy to park because they do not take up much space. Often times, you can place them in a small place near your home or in the city.

However, there are a couple of things to keep in mind when considering using a scooter for your daily trips.

The first thing to keep in mind is that motorcycles and mopeds do not provide nearly the same level of safety as cars. This is for several obvious reasons. One is that you only go on two wheels instead of four. While it is very difficult to roll a car over, unfortunately falling off a motorcycle is quite easy if you hit a slippery stretch of road when cornering.

The second reason is that you are not locked in a protective cage with air bags and seat belts. As a result, if you have a collision, you are much more likely to be seriously injured. Although motorcycles account for only a small proportion of road traffic in most countries, they generally account for a disproportionate proportion of fatalities in accidents.

A third reason is that you are much smaller on the road, so cars may not see you. In the vast majority of accidents involving motorcycles and automobiles, the driver of the automobile said he did not see the bicycle coming.

There are steps you can take to mitigate these risks. The first is that you must be properly trained. Get some lessons and then take an advanced course. This will help teach you the essential skills to avoid accidents.

The second step you need to take is to make sure you are visible. White helmets and light-up vests or brightly colored bikes may not look good, but they can play a huge role in keeping you safe. Official studies have found that there is a significant reduction in the risk of accidents and injuries in cases where cyclists are clearly visible to other traffic.

The third safety step you need to take is wearing the proper protective gear. A full face helmet, gloves, and leather jacket can really provide a lot of protection should you get off your motorcycle or scooter. Make sure these are all double stitched and from reputable companies. Normal stylish clothing or ski gloves will not be suitable. Many people simply wear a pair of denim jeans, but these won’t provide much protection against leg abrasion from a rough road surface. Protective boots are also important, as the feet, legs, and hands are the most commonly injured body parts in motorcycle accidents.
