Why Corvettes And Rock Music Are A Perfect Combination

Auto

Admit it, whenever a Corvette passes by, time has a fun way of standing still, right? America’s sports car has been thrilling us since 1953. From its humble beginnings with an in-line six-cylinder engine, to the astonishing blocks of the 1960s and ’70s. 2-speed powerglides to the 6-speed ZF, the Corvette has had every type of transmission imagined in a car. However, whatever the powertrain or engine, any Corvette will haul mail at full speed. Uphill, downhill, straight or curvy, the Corvette performs in any condition. If you’ve ever tried to keep up with one, or have been lucky enough to drive one, you know what I’m talking about.

Where exactly does music fit into this? Several ways, which I would like to explain. First, the type of music commonly heard in a Corvette doesn’t even come from the speakers. It actually comes from the back of the car. You guessed it, I’m talking about the exhaust. The time, the engine is the tried and true 5.7-liter small block 350, or the big block 427, which is music to my ears. The rumble of the chambered exhaust, or a good old-fashioned side pipe setup, is about as good as any classic rock hit. My personal Corvette’s CD player is rarely used, I just can’t get over the sound the car makes. A low throaty rumble at idle to a full throttle howl, it just doesn’t get better than that.

Next, how many songs were made about the Corvette or in reference to a Corvette? The Beach Boys begin with a reference to a fuel-injected Sting Ray in their classic hit, Shut Down. Jan and Dean had the big rock hit, Dead Man’s Curve. The Jaguar and the Vette to the end. I never really understood who won that race. According to the lyrics, the Corvette was leading the final chorus. I’d like to think the Vette took it. Marty Friedman even got into the groove with his instrumental hit, Fuel Injected Stingray.

Entering the era I am most comfortable with, the ’80s music scene. Prince kicked off his classic’ 80s hit song Little Red Corvette. An appropriate song in reference to the Corvette is Bad Company and its 1980s hit Rock of America. What other car could be referenced with a title like that?!? David Lee Roth released his hit, Sensible Shoes. Has it all, Corvette, good job, now all you need are sensible shoes to complete the package !!

Even the country stars of the 80s were carried away by Americas Sports Car. Remember George Jones and his smash hit, The Corvette Song? It was hotter than a two dollar gun !! Hopefully everyone will remember the great tribute to a fallen soldier. David Ball’s Riding With Private Malone is always a classic favorite. What she called Chevy was a 66 Corvette. Bless you Pvt. Malone and all of our fallen heroes.

Whatever you call it, Americas Sports Car or Americas Super Car, the Corvette has and will always go hand in hand with the hits of classical music. Even the creator of the Corvette, Zora Duntov, couldn’t have imagined anything better. Don’t get me wrong, I love all of America’s classic cars. The Corvette turns out to be my favorite. What else can you say? The Corvette and the hits of classical music. A match made in heaven.

Remember, no one writes songs about imports!
