Critical thinking: is it easy for the media to manipulate people’s emotions?

Technology

It has been said that the mainstream media does not need to prove that what they are selling is the truth in order to influence people; all you need to do is make sure people see the information. What this boils down to is that once someone has been exposed to a certain opinion, it can end up being seen as the truth.

Like a sponge, your mind will have absorbed what you have seen, and it will have an effect on how you perceive the world. This information will not have been kept at a distance and scrutinized by the critical faculties; will have entered directly.

The power of repetition

What will help with this process is that as many news sources say the same thing and these news sources have their information (propaganda) everywhere. So by having the same viewpoints relentlessly drilled into your brain from all directions, there will be no reason for your conscious mind to question anything.

This part of them may say that if what they are being told is not the truth, why are so many news sources saying the same thing? Furthermore, the fact that so many people have the same views can also be seen as further evidence.

The first part

Naturally, living in an environment or ‘echo chamber’ that is saturated with the same views will have a strong effect on someone’s mind, but there is more to it than that. What this source of information also does to bypass someone’s critical faculties is to focus on the emotional part of her being.

The last thing this information source wants is for people to question what they are told and think for themselves. Certain words and images can be used to tap into the emotional part of your being, thus getting your thinking brain out of the way.

an analogy

One way to get an idea of what’s going on is to imagine that someone’s thinking brain is their security system, while their emotional brain is the part where their jewelry is kept. In the same way that valuable items in a building would be extremely vulnerable if security were to fall down, your inner selves will be just as vulnerable without the ability of your minds to discern what is true or not.

The gates to your own inner kingdom will be open, preparing you to be taken advantage of. And, once this part of them has been violated, their inner world will be controlled by the mainstream media.

a puppet

This source of information can tell them to jump and it won’t be long before their feet leave the ground. Then they will be an individual, but they will behave as if they are simply an extension of something or someone else.

In addition to having the ability to control what they feel; they will also have the ability to control how they behave. Clearly, the media isn’t just interested in controlling how people feel; they also want to control how they behave.

A big difference

Just as a salesperson knows, this source knows that the best way to influence someone’s behavior is to influence their emotions. Simply talking to the rational part of yourself is unlikely to get the ball moving.

Focusing on your thinking brain may work from time to time, but focusing on your emotional brain will be much more fruitful. In a way, tapping into someone’s emotional brain and bypassing their thinking brain turns them from an adult into a child.

another form of abuse

The difference, of course, is that while an emotionally motivated child can’t do much, an emotionally motivated adult can become a valuable foot soldier. After all, this source of information doesn’t just want someone to feel a certain way for no reason; they want you to feel a certain way in order to follow an agenda that is usually hidden.

This does not mean that this source of information will not present something that needs to happen; what it means is that it is probably a small part of what is really going on and what is being presented cannot be more than a lie. So one can happily accept something, believing it to be the right thing to do, only to be enslaved by it as time goes on.

It is easy

However, while it would be easy to say that the mainstream media are masters when it comes to influencing how people feel and controlling their behavior, there is more to it than that. What gives this source of information an advantage is that it is often the exception to the rule that someone has a good understanding of their emotions and that this part of them is in balance.

There are a number of reasons someone wouldn’t have a good relationship with their emotions, and the fact that the so-called educational system largely ignores this part of someone’s being doesn’t help. However, this shouldn’t come as a surprise as critical thinking is rarely taught as there is more of a focus on teaching someone what to think, not how to think.

a sitting duck

If, then, someone does not have the ability to think critically and their emotional self is out of control, they are completely open to being exploited by the mainstream media. However, while this source of information is the focus here, it is merely one arm of a growing operation.

Someone like this could be in a lot of internal conflict, which means that their emotional self could often take over. As a result of this, it will be a challenge for them to operate as a complete human being.

Some reasons

Therefore, if someone discovers that mainstream media has the ability to trigger shame, guilt, fear, and/or a sense of helplessness within them, it may show that they are experiencing trauma. This could be due to what they have experienced as adults and/or it could go back to what happened during their early years.

It could go back even further, being the result of what has been passed down to you from your ancestors or what you went through in a past life. Regardless of why this is so, having this trauma within them will make it more difficult for them to think clearly.

conclusion

Seeing the media as perpetrators and someone as a victim would be easy, but this would mean that nothing can be done. The reality is that the only way the media can do this is if someone lets them.

For this not to happen, it will be essential for someone to heal their emotional wounds and the trauma they carry inside. This is something that can be done with the help of a therapist or healer.
