Metal Bunk Beds Vs Wood Bunk Beds

When it comes to bunk beds, there are many styles and models to choose from, but which one is the best for you? There are many different types of bunks to choose from, including twins on twins, twin on full, full on full, ladder, and more. With that said, your first decision will have to be between choosing a metal frame and choosing a wooden frame.

Most bunk beds were originally made of wood, but recently manufacturers have started adding a wider selection of metal frames to their repertoire. You will still see that most are made of wood. If you go to a local retail store or buy online, you will notice that the selection of metal frames is not very large.

So the question is should I go with metal or wood? This depends on multiple factors that you need to consider before making a final decision. The metal frame provides greater support and durability than the wooden frame, however it lacks the traditional look and feel of the iconic bunk bed design. Now, each type of bunk can be made of wood or metal, so choosing the type of frame based on style limitations is not a problem. However, each style will have differences depending on the material with which it is built.

A metal frame will support more weight than the traditional wooden frame, but it also has its flaws. The main problem with the metal frame is that they are not as stylish as the wooden frames. With a wooden frame you can have many different designs and colors. Unfortunately, most metal bunk beds come in black or white and most have the same design. The other problem comes from the cold touch of the metal. For my part, I like my bed to be warm and comfortable, so I don’t want to hold onto a cold bar when I get up. This is less likely to happen with traditional wooden rails.

However, traditional wooden designs also have their flaws. With age, many begin to wear out and chip. This has the ability to cause minor irritations and scrapes. Also, as beds are used more and more over the years, they can start to squeak as the joints loosen, which can also cause them to wobble. However, it is an easy solution to tighten the joint unless they are glued together then it requires a bit more work.

Each type of frame has its advantages and its flaws, it really is up to the consumer to choose the style and look they want for their bunk bed. Both wooden frames and metal frames will last a long time, but you have to choose between durability and style.
