Remote Play: Playstation 3 and PSP

Shopping Product Reviews

Remote Play is a feature of the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable, which allows users to interact with the PlayStation Portable Xross Media Bar (XMB) for PS3. Users can access music, videos, games, television, and photos for PlayStation, PlayStation Store, and various applications stored on their PlayStation 3’s hard drive, or even on their external flash drive or optical media connected to the PlayStation 3.

Remote Play works with video image output encoding on the PlayStation 3, which is delivered wirelessly on the PSP. Any action performed on the PlayStation Portable, such as pressing buttons on the PlayStation 3, is reloaded through the same connection.

Sound can also be directed and played on the Sony PSP, or as a replacement delivered through the normal PlayStation 3 audio connection that allows the PSP to be used as a remote control for the PlayStation 3 when used as a media player. This is especially useful if the console is connected to a video projector, which means you don’t need to turn on the projector just to play music.

The latest update includes the ability to use Remote Play over the Internet. By doing things this way, you can turn on your PlayStation 3 remotely using racing apps and play all PlayStation 3 games, both stored on your hard drive and on an optical disc. In fact, with Remote Play, you can also include a Sony PSP as an additional tool. During a demo of some racing games, Sony showcased some of its money saved from TV sales by showing how Remote Play for PSP allowed the PSP to function as a rear view mirror during gameplay.

Remote Play has been available for some Sony VAIOs in Japan for some time, and some people have configured it to work on non-VAIO computers. However, it appears that VAIO users in the US are finally getting official support with PS3 Remote Play. Currently supported computers include only VAIOs with all the features you would expect such as live streaming, Bluetooth keyboard functionality, and USB flexibility.

This new advent in gaming technology will help further increase the reach and convenience of gaming around the world. More and more game consoles are giving their players and fans the ability to use their computers to enhance the game, further blurring the lines between reality and virtual. Most players say that developments cannot come fast enough.
