Theatrical Movies of 2009: Top 7 Personal Favorites

Arts Entertainments

When I go to the movies, I try to see movies that are worth my time and money. So I look up trailers, reviews, and ask my friends what they think of the movies I wanted to see. Sometimes the best advice is personal experience. After time and energy to create a list of the best movies, I have listed my favorites below.

  • 1 up
  • This movie is directed by Pete Docter and Bob Peterson. The screenwriter for this movie is also Bob Peterson. The main cast that unfolded such a great film were the voices of Ed Asner, Christopher Plummer and John Ratzenburg.

Now usually kids would be the responsible group begging to see recent animated movies, this turned the tables and I demanded that we watch “Up” instead of Twilight. Of course they didn’t care and we got our tickets.

This has been one of the best movies of 2009 and Ed Asner plays the lead role in the movie. Remember that this is an animated film, and it is one that belongs to Pixar. Anything from Pixar is gold. This studio shares the best animation since Walt Disney.

Up is set in an image about a small house flying into the sky, with the help of thousands of helium balloons. The film follows 78-year-old Carl Fredicksen who doesn’t want to go to a nursing home. So he decides that he is still keeping the promise he made to his wife. His promise is to see the world and locate his home in a specific place. Everything is going according to plan, until a bubbly kid upsets the plan and then he embarks on an epic journey. Carl then begins to make many new friends along the way.

This is a Pixar movie that is shot in Disney Digital 3D, and this means that you will see a very detailed movie that is beautiful.

  • 2.Avatar
  • This play is directed and written by James Cameron. The main cast of this movie includes; Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Michelle Rodriguez, and Stephen Lang.

This was the biggest movie of 2009. There was no other movie that was bigger than Avatar since Titanic. James Cameron reinvented 3D technology. When you see Avatar, the effect is amazing; it really makes you shiver in your seat. It’s an experience that reminds you why it’s such a rare glorious moment when you watch high-quality 3D movies like Avatar. To add more emphasis, watching DVDs will never replace the exhilarating feeling of watching 3D movies. James Cameron shows his strength in moviemaking by creating a massive sci-fi epic.

What Avatar is about is that we, the audience, start following a paralyzed war veteran in the distant future, who is taken to a planet called Pandora. This veteran, Sam Worthington, gets caught up in a conflict between the planet’s native Na’Vi population on Pandora and his Earth friends.

  • 3. The Charming Bones
  • This movie is directed by Peter Jackson. The screenwriters for this movie are Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh and Phillipa Boyens. The main cast includes Saoirse Ronan, Rachel Weisz, Mark Wahlberg, Stanley Tucci, and Susan Sarandon.

The brilliant director and screenwriters of The Lord of the Rings have reunited once again, but in a new project. This project is considered interesting and exciting. The film is an excerpt from Alice Sebold’s 2002 novel – “The Lovely Bones”. This novel was an unlikely choice that would not have been chosen to become a blockbuster publishing success.

The book shows a sad but sweet story of Susie Salmon, who is 14 years old. She then passes away, but not accidentally. Susie then watches her family and her killer from the sky. She watches her family as they try to move on after she passes away. This novel has been the best-selling novel of the last decade.

It may be surprising that the director/writer best known for Hobbits and Orcs got the job. Peter Jackson is a great choice to direct this creepy film, as he demonstrated earlier in his 1994 drama ‘Heavenly Creatures’, which involved the obsession and murder of teenagers, starring Kate Winslet.

This 1994 drama proves that the chosen director and screenwriters produced a great movie.

  • 4. The way
  • This movie is directed by John Hillcoat. The screenwriter is Joe Penhall. The main cast includes; Viggo Mortensen, Kodi Smit-Mcphee, Charlize Theron, Robert Duvall, and Guy Pearce.

Hollywood at the time was trying to figure out how they could turn Cormac McCarthy’s best-selling book ‘The Road’ into a hit. Cormac’s decade-long career has developed a reputation as a famous author who writes harsh, brutal images and a command of the English language. His 2006 novel ‘The Road’ became a huge success.

The ideal director suitable for this role is Australian director John Hillcoat. John most recently directed ‘The Proposition’ in 2005, but it was sadly underrated as a western. ‘The Proposition’ finds beauty and grace in the darkest of times. It is also both physical and emotional. This concept makes it perfect for ‘The Road’.

This novel is about the story of a father and a son who let their love for each other sustain, this idea touched a lot of nerves for the millions of readers. The director and the perfect cast brought the same effect of the novel to the big screens.

  • 5. The invention of the lie
  • The directors and screenwriters of this movie are Ricky Gervais and Matthew Robinson. The main cast includes Ricky Gervais, Jennifer Garner, Rob Lowe, Jason Bateman, Christopher Guest, Tina Fey, Louis CK, Jonah Hill, and Jeffery Tambor.

Ricky Gervais is very funny. He is the original creator of ‘The Office’ and ‘Extras’. Ricky has starred in some Hollywood movies like ‘Ghost Town’ and ‘For your Consideration’. May I add that this is Ricky’s first film where he is both the director and the screenwriter? Ricky has put together an impressive cast for the comedy that hasn’t been seen in years and the concept of the movie is fantastic.

This comedy is about a world where lies never existed, until a man tells the first lie and begins to use this new idea for his own benefit.

  • 6. Shutter Island
  • This movie is directed by Martin Scorsese and written by Laeta Kalogridis. The main cast includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo, Ben Kingsley, Emily Mortimer, Michelle Williams, Max Von Sydow, and Jackie Earle Haley.

The association between Leonardo and Martin has been successfully productive for fame. His story includes ‘Gangs of New York’, ‘The Aviator’ and ‘The Departed’. These films have had numerous nominations, winning Best Picture and Best Director. Now Leonardo and Martin are teaming up again and this would be a huge alarm for fans of the couple.

The team has chosen to adapt a crime novel by Dennis Lane, called ‘Mystic River’. Shutter Island follows two US Marshals who are Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo. A hurricane traps them on an island in Massachusetts while searching for a mentally ill man. This mental patient might add that he has a violent past and escaped from a nearby insane asylum. The asylum has a nonviolent as well. This movie is a perfect thriller to enjoy.

  • 7. Watchmen
  • The director of this movie is Zack Snyder. The screenwriters are David Hayter and Alex Tse. The main cast includes Patrick Wilson, Jackie Earle Haley, Malin Akerman, Billy Crudup, Jeffery Dean Morgan, Matthew Goode, Stephen McHattie, and Carla Gugino.

This movie was another most anticipated movie. It’s a movie version of a beloved graphic novel. Iron Man and the Dark Knight have made more audience members take comic book movies seriously. Watchmen, is a new evolutionary step in this new Genre. This movie has a superhero meta-commentary and a murder mystery that spans the globe. The tastes of this movie are similar to Dark Knight. If you liked the Dark Knight, then this movie will give you the same feeling.

I enjoyed seeing many movies in theaters in 2009 and still do.
