All about the 12th edition of the Cricket World Cup

Sports

As you may have read in my previous article, Cricket is played in three formats: tests, one day and T20. To decide the champion of the game, the world cup is being played, in the format of one day. I’ve covered some vital information about their upcoming world cup, which starts at the end of this month.

general

The 2019 cricket world cup, starting from May 30, 2019, is the 12th edition of the men’s cricket world cup. The main event is the most coveted prize in sports and will be played between 10 teams. The world cup is always played in the one day format. The event is held in the ODI format. England and Wales will play the hosts for the fifth time overall, and the first time since 1999.

Qualification

As a qualifying criteria, eight teams automatically qualified based on their one-day international rankings. The last two places were contested by six teams in the qualifier played in 2018. That was a hotly contested competition in Zimbabwe. Six teams were divided into two groups, where each team played two games in the group. The top two teams from each group played the semi-finals and the winners of the semi-finals played the final.

India, Australia, England, New Zealand, Pakistan, Bangladesh, South Africa and Sri Lanka were the automatically qualified teams based on the rankings. West Indies and Afghanistan were the ones who entered via qualification. Looking at their rich cricket history, West Indie being forced to enter through qualifying was a tough pill to swallow for many cricket lovers.

Based on recent form and record for match wins, hosts England and India are tagged as favorites to win the competition. Australia, the defending champions, are the dark horses, who can shock some teams to win the world cup. South Africa have been a force to be reckoned with since their inception in world cricket, never going beyond the semi-finals. Their fans hope that South Africa will break this curse to win a world cup this time.

schedule summary

The event will start on May 30, 2019 and will last for 46 days. Hosts England will play South Africa in the opening match. Two semi-finals will be played on July 9 and 11, respectively, and the final will be held on Sunday, July 14.
