Orisha: The Evolving Forces of Santería, Lucumi, Candomblé, IFA and the West African Tradition

A new look at the orisha religion and the ancestral cult.

This series of articles is my humble attempt to offer my own perspective on what I feel is an often misunderstood/misunderstood concept called “The Orisha”. The Orisha concept developed in West Africa, although the idea of cosmic entities governing the evolutionary process was common to the entire African continent.

I will provide more information on the “Seven African Powers” (often known as Elegba, Obatala, Yemoja, Oshun, Oya, Ogun and Shango); including herbs, crystals, astrological designations, chakra locations, temperament, spiritual invocations, and much more information regarding the “Seven African Powers”. These various spiritual gifts should be used not only to invoke the Orisha energies but also to open their understanding of how they maintain the evolutionary process of the cosmos.

Although the Orisha are cosmic forces, more applicable, they are formulas that give rise to any and all desired bodily realities. These heavenly formulas are present for the sole purpose of bringing all beings on the planet in possession of a soul to the highest pinnacle of their spiritual consciousness.

The key to understanding these particular forces is to approach them from the inside out. The Orisha are powerful thought forms that must be perceived as various aspects of your own spiritual makeup, not as eternal titans waged in a “good versus evil” struggle. These spiritual forces do not function under the same moral code as a carnal being would. The Orisha deal purely in polarities (Light or Dark, Masculine or Feminine, North or South, Water or Fire, Electric or Magnetic, etc…).

The Orisha sustain and develop the natural functions of planet earth and the universe as we see it, but those extrinsic processes are only a spectral reflection of what is occurring in their own body/mind/intrinsic spirit. Nothing happens outside your body that doesn’t happen inside. If you approach the study of esoteric, occult, metaphysical, or traditional African religion in this way, you will open your own consciousness 10-fold and quickly move light years beyond your current ceiling of perceptual awareness.

Recognizing now that these Orisha are forces of power that represent and intertwine with their own internal power matrix, it would stand to reason that as they evolve, they do so at the same time. As you go through your corruption or return process, they also follow you to this place. More significantly, your perception of how an Orisha looks or behaves must change based on the ever-changing times. Imagining something walking through the celestial body with flowing robes around it would probably be a conjuration of religious dogma and programming. In the same case, if Christ was killed in 2012 by parasitic forces, would he hang himself on a cross? No, they would put him in an electric chair or give him a lethal injection. People would then wear those emblems around their necks and those images would adorn churches all over the world as the cross does today.

Now, imagine how the Orisha would present themselves in modern times…

There are forces of

The sea (Subconscious)…Olokun or Mother of Water or Yemoja

The Forest (The Underworld)

Freshwater (Congregation)…Osun or Erzulie Freda or Lakshmi or Het-HRU

Wisdom (Omnipresence)….Obatala or Damballah or Tehuti or Orunmila

Crossroads (Opportunity)….Esu or Elegba or Hermes or Mercury

How would these forces now manifest in these end times of 2012?

For example: in a world where unconditional love is practically abandoned and all intimate relationships are based on behavioral conditions and expectations, how does Oshun’s concept of “love” continue to be strengthened, fed and nurtured? Is Oshun so concerned with what humans perceive as “love” or is she more focused on joining forces? If we are able to understand this truth, then we will detect these Orisha in so many unexpected world events and social activities.

Did Ogun give rise to Mike Tyson?

Did Shangó give rise to Muhammad Ali?

Did Esu give rise to Dr. Martin Luther King?

Did Oshun give rise to Bob Marley?

Did Oya give rise to Assata and Tupac Shakur?
