PMS and Artificial Sweetener

Health Fitness

As we mentioned in the previous article, PMS affects more than 70% to 90% of women before menopause in the US and less so in Southeast Asian women due to their diet. The occurrence of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) has more than doubled in the last 50 years due to the acceptance of its medical condition and caused by an unhealthy diet high in saturated foods. PMS is defined as a defective function of the ovaries related to a woman’s menstrual cycle, affects a woman’s physical and emotional state, and sometimes interferes with daily activities as a result of hormonal fluctuations. The syndrome occurs one to two weeks before menstruation and then subsides when the period begins. It is said that the symptoms can be so severe that 10-15% of women have to take time off work, costing companies millions of dollars a year. In this article, we will discuss how artificial sweetener exhibits PMS.

1. Are artificial sweeteners safe?

We always think that sweetener helps in weight control and we delude ourselves into thinking that sweetener is better than sugar. In fact, it is not true. Sugar helps provide energy for our body’s needs, excessive consumption is the problem, while sweetener contains aspartame, the substance causes more harm than good to our body, including weight gain and PMS symptoms, like depression and anxiety.

2. Serotonin

The artificial sweetener depresses the nervous system in the fight against stress, resulting in less levels of serotonin being produced, leading to mood swings and depression.

3. Amino acids

Amino acids are important to the liver in protein metabolism. The artificial sweetener contains high levels of aspartic and phenylalanine and is more than 150 times sweeter than sugar. Taking artificial sweetener can cause an overdose of these amino acids, increasing the risk of nervous tension leading to memory loss, mood swings, depression, and PMS symptoms.

4.methanol

Artificial Sweetener When digested, the methanol in the sweetener turns into formaldehyde, which is toxic to our body, causing an imbalance in protein metabolism in the brain and leading to PMS symptoms such as mood swings, anxiety and depression, if the dose is exceeded.

5. Addictive

The chemical aspartame is so addictive. It is advisable to stop taking artificial sweeteners slowly or ask your doctor for help. Quitting aspartame abruptly can cause withdrawal symptoms.
