Youth Activities: Wondering what types of youth activities are available?

What activities would your child like to participate in? Studies have shown that youth who regularly participate in some type of activity are less likely to engage in risky behavior. The benefits of structured activity, compared to a teenager with too much free time, far outweigh any cons.

Studies have shown that a teenager with too much time usually leads to some type of cry for attention which usually results in negative behavior patterns such as: an increase in hanging out with the “wrong people” which can lead to a increase in drug use. and alcohol abuse, the nature of smoking, or other harmful behaviors. When we have nothing to do, we find something to do; therefore, it is much more beneficial to get involved in some sort of organized activity, which may include:

1) Sports: Sports are a great way to get fit and get involved. Whether it’s a basketball team, baseball, golf, or soccer game, a sports team helps members feel a sense of belonging and fosters camaraderie among members. Physical activity has also been shown to improve mood, mental alertness, and reduce the risk of anxiety and depression. Never mind all the benefits of joining a sport, but it’s also fun!

2) Hobbies: Hobbies are a great way to pass the time, learn a new trade, art, or skill, and make friends while doing it. Maybe you take up model making, cooking, or even reading as a hobby.

3) Youth Clubs and Organizations: There are a variety of different clubs and organizations that offer a wide range of youth programs. From Sea, Army or Air Cadets, to Girl Guides, Scouts, Kiwanis, the options are many and offer great opportunities to develop self-confidence, team leadership and build new relationships.

4) Volunteer Groups – Find an activity you enjoy and volunteer for it. What a great way to donate your time and do something you enjoy. Whether it’s at an animal shelter, soup kitchen, museum, library, or anywhere else, you can meet new people, develop new skills, and learn about something you enjoy.

5) Intellectual, Academic and Extracurricular Programs: There are many different clubs that most schools and extracurricular programs offer that stimulate the mind and offer further advancement through intellectual and stimulating conventions. You could join the student council, debate club, or newspaper club. There are science clubs and math clubs, chess clubs, and others that will challenge you mentally and encourage team participation and interaction.

6) Community: There are a variety of community programs available for the public to join. There are religious groups that meet regularly, choral groups, drama clubs, dance and cultural groups, the options are endless.

Whichever youth activity you choose, you will benefit from creating strong supportive bonds between adults and youth, learning and developing new skills, becoming a contributing and productive member of society, making new friends, improving your academics, and feeling a sense of purpose. belonging and proud. Choose an activity based on your interests, then research what resources are available in your area! Have fun!
