DIRECTV’s portable satellite unit, known as the Sat-Go, looks like a large 27-pound laptop. It is a complete satellite TV system with a 17-inch monitor, satellite dish, receiver, rechargeable battery and AC/DC adapters for your car. All you have to do is plug it in, align the antenna, and you’re good to go.
With Sat-Go you can get satellite TV while you’re away from home, in an RV, camping, or on a road trip. And you can keep track of all the football games on NFL Sunday Ticket while keeping a close eye on your favorite team’s stadium.
The complete Sat-Go system can be purchased for less than $1,000 at electronic stores such as Best Buy or online stores such as ABT Electronics (abtelectronics.com).
DISH Network Portable Satellite TV
DISH Network’s portable system, the PocketDish, is not really a satellite television system. It’s a portable media player/recorder that can download shows from any of DISH Network’s 350 channels. You can also download content from your computer, DVD player, MP3 player, or VCR. An hour-long program on DISH Network can be downloaded to PocketDish in about five minutes. Who says you can’t take it with you?
The PocketDish AV402E has a 2.2-inch screen, weighs less than 7 ounces, and fits in your pocket. Its 20GB storage capacity allows you to store up to 10,000 songs, 40 movies or 20 hours of TV programming. The PocketDish AV500E has a 4-inch screen and a storage capacity of 30 GB. There is even an AV700 model with a capacity of 40 GB.
With PocketDish you get a remote control, a docking station and cables to connect to your TV or other electronic devices. You also get a rechargeable battery that gives you up to 4 hours of video playback and up to 15 hours of audio playback.
The last time I checked, the PocketDish was out of stock at most stores, but you can get refurbished models for $300 at online electronics stores like Satellite One (satelliteone.com).
