80s fashion: true women’s fashion or just an accessory?

80’s fashion is still the big trend on the streets. So what makes the ’80s so trendy? Why this Retro era has caught the attention of the current generation?

The 1980s ‘look’ can be divided into the following groups

Energy

This 1980s trend consisted of slicked back hair for men and BIG hair for women, huge shoulder pads, huge pockets, 3/4 length sleeves, high waisted leather skirts and sky high stilettos. This modality represented money and manifested the beginnings of the new capitalism.

TV shows like Dallas, Dynasty and Miami Vice represented power, money and glamour. Hollywood got top event movies like Rambo, Top Gun and Commando.

He is best represented musically by a number of 1980s artists such as Bonnie Tyler, Phil Collins, and Lionel Richie.

new wave

This trend was all about diagonal stripes, neon colors, T-shirts with Japanese characters, and asymmetrical haircuts. The style represented an alternative look to the future and a rebellion against power/capitalism.

Science fiction films from the 1980s that showcased this style include Blade Runner (Daryl Hannah and Sean Young) and The Hunger (with David Bowie). And it’s best represented musically by ’80s artists like Blondie, Talking Heads, Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet.

Tribal

This retro style had all of the following attributes: girls with side ponytails, headbands, baggy jumpers, acid washed jeans, leg warmers, leopard print, and berets. It was the laid-back, general boy-next-door style and the beginning of the MTV musical generation.

Some great movies that represent this trend include: The Breakfast club, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Flashdance, and Weird Science.

It is best represented by 1980s music artists like Madonna, Pat Benatar, Cyndi Lauper, and Van Halen.
